beautiful, sensitive and fragile, princess vaena velaryon was born to the then-princess rhaenyra targaryen and ser laenor velaryon, just under two years after the birth of her brother lucerys. as with her brothers, the princess has been the victim of rumours regarding her parentage since infancy, with speculations that she is the progeny of rhaenyra and ser harwin strong.following lucerys’s altercation with their uncle aemond targaryen, vaena suffered a traumatic breakdown. unable to eat, sleep or converse with others, vaena was sent to driftmark to be fostered by her paternal grandparents, princess rhaenys targaryen and lord corlys velaryon. there, she recovered her health and developed a strong attachment to her grandparents, princess rhaenys in particular. rhaenys' death and queen rhaenyra's disallowance of aid to rook's rest led to grave damages in the relationship between vaena and her mother.witnessing such violence as a child caused great psychological damage to the naturally sensitive girl, leading her to suffer from selective mutism as a child and young teenager amongst other mental hangovers. despite being a victim of the insults levied at her and her brothers that night, vaena's relationship with lucerys has always been strained due to her perception of him as the perpetrator of violence in the incident.on one of lord corlys’s voyages east, he acquired a relic said to be the petrified egg from the dragon held at the court of yellow emperor chai duq upon his marriage to a valyrian noblewoman. in an attempt to cheer his fractured granddaughter, lord corlys gifted the egg to vaena upon his return as a trinket. all were surprised when the egg began to hatch in her bed over the other ‘normal’ dragon egg she had been given. from the egg came the female hatchling named silverstar, vaena’s lifelong mount and companion.perhaps due to her ambiguous origins, silverstar possessed a number of differences from the other dragons in westeros. beyond her smaller size, the silver dragon was said to seem to levitate more than fly, and silverstar was seldom seen flapping her wings. additionally, it is rumored that princess vaena’s mount is incapable of producing dragonfire.
